The City of Marco Island operates under a council-manager form of government, with the City Council serving as the legislative and policy-making body of the City. The City Council appoints a City Manager to serve as the chief administrative manager of the city. As the city’s Chief Administrative Officer the City Manager is responsible for the day-to-day management of all operations of city government. The Manager prepares a budget for Council's consideration; recruits, hires and supervises the government staff; serves as the Council's chief
advisor' and carries out the Council's policies. Council members and citizens count on the manager to provide complete and objective information, pros and cons of alternatives, and long-term consequences. The Charter requires the manager to reside within the city limits which ensures that he/she is a residential member of the community.
