The City of Marco Island operates under a council-manager form of government, with the City Council serving as the legislative and policy-making body of the City. The City Council appoints a City Manager to serve as the chief administrative manager of the city, and in 2008 Steve Thompson accepted the role of City Manager for Marco Island. As the city’s Chief Administrative Officer, Mr. Thompson is responsible for the day-to-day management of all operations of city government. The Manager prepares a budget for Council's consideration; recruits,
hires and supervises the government staff; serves as the Council's chief advisor' and carries out the Council's policies. Council members and citizens count on the manager to provide complete and objective information, pros and cons of alternatives, and long-term consequences. The Charter requires the manager to reside within the city limits which ensures that he/she is a residential member of the community.
Mr. Thompson began his management career in 1982 in Aiken, SC, and served as both an assistant City Manager and City Manager for Aiken. He also served as the City Manager of Greenville, SC, as Assistant City Manager with the City of Virginia Beach, Virginia, and as City Manager of Deltona, Florida. In 2006, the International City/County Management Association (ICMA) recognized him for his 25 years of service as a professional city manager.
