ARTS ADVISORY COMMITTEE MINUTES
October 10, 2006
1. ROLL CALL
The meeting was called to order at 8:00 a.m.
Committee members present: Ms. Claudia Klug-Kowel, Ms. Vickie Kelber, Dr. William Tietze, Ms. Rose Ann Patterson, Ms. Nora Joel and Mr. Joel Gewirtz. Ms. Susan Oldershaw was absent.
City staff present: City Clerk Laura Litzan and Administrative Assistant Debbie McCabe.
Also present: Ms. Carol Glassman and Ms. Jo-Ann Sanborn with Marco Island Foundation for the Arts, Inc.
2. INTRODUCE APPOINTED COMMITTEE MEMBER – Ms. Vickie Kelber
City Council appointed Ms. Vickie Kelber to the Arts Advisory Committee on October 3, 2006.
Laura Litzan introduced Vickie Kelber to the committee.
Rose Patterson expressed concern to the committee about guidelines being in place.
Dr. William Tietze left the meeting after resigning from the committee. He appreciated the opportunity to serve on the board.
3. APPROVAL OF AGENDA
MOTION by Vicki Kelber to approve the agenda, amending to add item to elect Chairperson and Vice-Chairperson. Second by Nora Joel. MOTION CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY 5-0.
4. ELECT CHAIRPERSON AND VICE-CHAIRPERSON
MOTION by Rose Patterson to nominate Vickie Kelber to be Chairperson. Second by Nora Joel. MOTION CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY 5-0.
MOTION by Vicki Kelber to nominate Claudia Klug-Kowel to be Vice-Chairperson. Second by Rose Patterson. MOTION CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY 5-0.
5. APPROVAL OF SEPTEMBER 12, 2006 MINUTES
MOTION by Nora Joel to approve the September 12, 2006 minutes. Second by Claudia Klug-Kowel. MOTION CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY 5-0.
6. DISCUSSION
1. “Marco Man” Sculpture – Update
Laura Litzan advised there is an offer to purchase the “Marco Man” sculpture from the City as a donation and put it at the Esplanade.
MOTION by Rose Patterson to adhere to what the Arts Advisory Committee initially recommended to Council for “Marco Man,” and request the Beautification Committee to make their recommendations to Council on the best location for the “Marco Man”. Second by Nora Joel. MOTION CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY 5-0.
Vickie Kelber informed the committee that she would check with Dana Souza, Parks and Recreation Director, concerning the recommendations from the Beautification Committee on where to erect the “Marco Man” sculpture.
2. Finalize Guidelines and Workbook
Laura Litzan advised that the committee decided to use the workbook as a supplement to the guidelines.
Vickie Kelber recommended that the committee review the guidelines and at the next meeting the committee will review the workbook.
3. Donation from Marco Island Foundation for the Arts, Inc. (MIFA)
The committee received a letter from MIFA concerning whether the City would be interested in acquiring a bronze sculpture of two sea turtles and potentially locating it at Jane Hittler Park.
Ms. Jo-Ann Sanborn, with MIFA, showed pictures of the proposed sculpture and advised that MIFA is willing to work with the City on this wonderful community opportunity.
The committee is interested in the sculpture and will review the guidelines and present their recommendations to Council.
7. LIAISON INFORMATION
1. Rose Patterson
Rose Patterson advised that she has not been able to attend some of the other committee meetings such as the Beautification Committee because she has been traveling.
Laura Litzan advised that we will invite Dana Souza, Parks and Recreation Director, to the next Arts Advisory Committee meeting to give us an update and bring us a calendar of their meetings.
Vickie Kelber suggested that each committee member take turns attending the Parks and Recreation and Beautification Committee meetings.
8. OTHER BUSINESS
Laura Litzan mentioned that MIFA is interested in a piece of artwork at the Esplanade called “One-Mind” and that piece may be available. The artist is willing to work with the committee if we are interested. Ms. Jo-Ann Sanborn, with MIFA showed the committee a picture of the sculpture.
Vickie Kelber recommended we ask the offeror who wanted to purchase “Marco Man,” if they want to donate something that can be placed on city property instead of the Esplanade site.
Laura Litzan advised she would talk to the City Manager before asking if offeror would be interested in purchasing any other art and donating it to the City.
Vickie Kelber suggested that the committee start thinking about what we want to put in our parks, i.e. benches, bike racks, etc. and put it on the next agenda for discussion.
9. PUBLIC COMMENT
Ms. Carol Glassman expressed concern about a donation to purchase “Marco Man”.
10. ADJOURN
The meeting adjourned at 9:30 a.m.
The next Arts Advisory Committee is scheduled to meet at 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 14, 2006 in the lower level conference room at City Hall.
