ARTS ADVISORY COMMITTEE MINUTES

September 11, 2007



ROLL CALL

The meeting was called to order at 8:00 a.m. by Co-Chair Claudia Klug-Kowel.

Committee members present:  Ms. Nora Joel, Ms. Jo-Ann Sanborn, Ms. Lavonne Johnson, and Mr. Greg Glover.

City staff present:  Administrative Assistant Debbie McCabe and City Clerk Laura.

Members of the public present:  None.


APPROVE AGENDA

MOTION by Lavonne Johnson to approve the agenda, amended to address Items 5, 6 and 7 first.   Second by Jo-Ann Sanborn.   MOTION CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY 5-0.


APPROVE MINUTES FOR JULY 10, 2007

MOTION by Nora Joel to approve the July 10, 2007 Arts Advisory Committee minutes.  Second by Greg Glover.  MOTION CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY 5-0.


REVIEW PROPOSAL FOR “JOURNEY’S END” RIDLEY SEA TURTLES

Laura Litzan advised that the Marco Island Foundation of the Arts (MIFA) submitted a proposal for approval to donate the “Journey’s End” Ridley Sea Turtles to Jane Hittler Park.  She will talk with Parks and Recreation Director Dana Souza about the base and location for the sculpture.

Laura Litzan recommended the committee forward the proposal to City Council for their consideration at their October meeting.

MOTION by Jo-Ann Sanborn to forward to City Council the proposal to donate the “Journey’s End” Ridley Sea Turtles sculpture for their consideration at the October Council meeting.   Second by Nora Joel.  MOTION CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY 5-0.


UPDATE ON DOLPHIN STATUE

Laura Litzan advised that Jo-Ann Sanborn has finished painting the repairs to the dolphin statute.

Laura Litzan also informed the committee that Public Information Coordinator Lisa Douglass is working on a press release to recognize Jo-Ann Sanborn for donating her time and service.


FINALIZE MARCO MAN DEDICATION

Laura Litzan showed the committee where the “Marco Man” statue will be located at City Hall.

The committee discussed an art brochure for the future.

The committee agreed to hold the dedication for “Marco Man” on November 16, 2007 at 1:00 p.m.

Laura Litzan advised that she would organize the dedication and invite City Council, City Manager, City staff, City committees, etc.


REVIEW DRAFT OF THE PUBLIC ART MASTER PLAN

Claudia Klug-Kowel asked the committee to review the draft of the Public Art Master Plan and comment on any changes.

The committee briefly discussed an ordinance for public art and agreed to review the public art ordinance for the City of Naples at the next meeting.

Claudia Klug-Kowel commented that there will probably not be money budgeted for art this year.  She suggested working on donations from interested participants to help fund public art.

Laura Litzan suggested an art brochure explaining how to donate to the city for public art.
Claudia Klug-Kowel recommended that the public art donation form, bill of sale, maps for present and future art be included as an attachment to the Public Art Master Plan.  She also suggested and the committee agreed to change the plan to read “Public Arts Master Plan” instead of “Public Art Master Plan.”

Claudia Klug-Kowel also asked the committee to think about anything else that should be included in the Public Arts Master Plan timeline for the first 10 years.

The meeting adjourned at 8:59 a.m.

The committee agreed to hold the next Arts Advisory Committee meeting on Tuesday, October 16, 2007 at 8:00 a.m. in the lower level conference room at City Hall.
