Beautification Committee Minutes 10-17-07

BEAUTIFICATION ADVISORY COMMITTEE
MINUTES – OCTOBER 17, 2007


1.  ROLL CALL
Chairwoman Mellinger called the meeting to order at 3:00 p.m.

Committee members present:  Sandi Johnson, Joyce Kaelin, Susan LaGrotta (arrived 3:05), Syd Mellinger and Barbara Murphy.  Absent:  M. A. Kline.

City staff present:  Dana Souza, Director of Parks and Recreation, Susan Patton, Secretary.

Others present:  Michael McGee, McGee and Associates; Jim Riviere, Marco Island Planning Board; Steve Stephanides, Christmas Island Style.


2.  APPROVE AGENDA

                MOTION by Joyce Kaelin to APPROVE THE AGENDA.  Second by        Sandi Johnson.  Motion approved 5-0.


3 APPROVE MINUTES

                MOTION by Sandi Johnson to APPROVE THE SEPTEMBER 5, 2007 REGULAR  MEETING MINUTES.  Second by Barbara Murphy.  Motion                                   approved 5-0.                   

                
4.  PUBLIC COMMENT
Mr. Steve Stephanides, representing Christmas Island Style, asked the Committee to consider allowing some Christmas Island banners in locations reserved for City banners.


5.  CONSULTANT/CONTRACTOR – MEDIAN LANDSCAPE MAINTENANCE
A.  Mike McGee
Mr. McGee stated that there are no major problems at this time.

B. Robert Kindelan
Mr. Kindelan reported that there are potential code violation issues at the wild flower location on Winterberry Drive.  It was suggested that a sign identifying the location as a wild flower test site might help prevent a problem.

There was limited discussion regarding the perennial peanut test site at the traffic triangle in front of City Hall.  Most of the vegetation was destroyed during road construction.

                MOTION by Sandi Johnson to RECOMMEND THAT PLANTINGS OTHER THAT PERENNIAL PEANUT BE INSTALLED IN THE FORMER                                      TRAFFIC TRIANGLE IN FRONT OF CITY HALL.  Second by Barbara Murphy.  Motion approved 5-0.


6.  COMMITTEE DISCUSSION
A.  Banners
Mr. Souza presented the new City banners to the Committee.  The banners should be installed by the first of November.
        
B.  Award Criteria
Ms. Joyce Kaelin volunteered to further develop criteria for the proposed Marco in Bloom awards along with Mr. Souza.  The item will be discussed in detail at the November meeting.

C. Tree Ordinance
The Committee reviewed the most recent draft of the tree ordinance and offered suggestions.  Mr. Souza requested that members do a thorough review of the ordinance prior to the November meeting.

                MOTION by Sandi Johnson to DRAFT A LETTER TO CITY COUNCIL SUPPORTING THE SUGGESTION THAT LANDSCAPERS ATTEND                                     THE ROOKERY BAY CLASS.  Second by Barbara Murphy.  Motion       approved 5-0.


7.  DIRECTOR’S UPDATE

Mr. Souza also reported on the following beautification matters:
·       One of the new Fox Tail Palms planted on N. Collier Boulevard has died.
·       Wilson Miller is being contracted to design the landscape for S. Collier Boulevard from Winterberry Drive to Collier Court for the budgeted amount of $13,000.

8.  COMMITTEE COMMUNICATION
There was no additional committee discussion.

The meeting was adjourned at 4:55 p.m.
