BEAUTIFICATION ADVISORY COMMITTEE
MINUTES – January 2, 2008
1. ROLL CALL
Chairwoman Mellinger called the meeting to order at 3:00 p.m.
Committee members present: Sandi Johnson, Joyce Kaelin, Mary Ann. Kline, Syd Mellinger, Barbara Murphy, Alan Brown and Susan LaGrotta (arrived 3:10 p.m.)
City staff present: Dana Souza, Director of Parks and Recreation and Lois Gunter, Secretary.
Others present: Susan Oldershaw, President Marco Island Garden Club, Michael McGee from McGee and Associates and Jim Fritchey from Commercial Land Maintenance.
2. APPROVE AGENDA
MOTION by Barbara Murphy TO APPROVE THE AGENDA. Second by Joyce Kaelin. Motion approved 7-0.
3 APPROVE MINUTES
MOTION by Barbara Murphy to APPROVE THE December 5, 2007 REGULAR MEETING MINUTES. Second by Sandi Johnson. Motion approved 7-0.
4. PUBLIC COMMENT
Sandy Johnson reported on Dee Lindberg’s health situation and the Committee discussed how to best proceed in approaching other members of the Lutheran Church. Committee consensus was that Sandy will communicate with Marco Lutheran Church with available space that might consider a park on their grounds.
5. CONSULTANT/CONTRACTOR – MEDIAN LANDSCAPE MAINTENANCE
A. Mike McGee
Mr. McGee provided options for tree selection and placement for the medians. Following discussion Mr. McGee agreed to provide refined options at the February 6, 2008 Committee meeting with the suggested minor alterations.
B. Jim Fritchey
Mr. Fritchey reported on recent fertilization and treatment that has been applied.
6. COMMITTEE DISCUSSION
A. South Collier Boulevard
Dana Souza presented the Wilson-Miller plan and noted that the budget is $100,000 and the proposal is $146,115. A possible option for the additional monies may be to request additional funding approval from the City Council.
B. North Barfield Design
Mr. McGee presented options for the design to the Committee.
C. Garden Club Gift - Tract C and D
Susan OIdershaw, President of the Marco Island Garden Club, presented ideas regarding a Butterfly Garden that the Beautification Committee might consider in using the $10,000 gift they are offering.
Following committee discussion it was agreed that Mr. McGee will provide other options for the area being considered.
D. Greenscape Workshop - January 25, 2008
Mr. Souza noted that efforts are being made to make it clear that the workshop is for the homeowner. There was further discussion about the feasibility of a series of seminars to provide information to everyone involved in landscaping.
E. Arbor Day - January 18, 2008
Two trees are scheduled to be planted at Charter School.
F. Orchid Workshop - February 13, 2008
It was noted that Alan Brown and Mary Ann Kline will coordinate the workshop. Mr. Souza noted that Lisa Douglas will be available to assist in promoting the event.
G. 5-Year CIP Prioritization
The Committee reviewed the roadside border projects for years 2008 through 2015. Chairwoman Mellinger polled members and consensus was to adjust projects to better meet the needs of the City.
H. LDC Revisions
It was agreed to schedule a workshop in February or March to address the LDC Revision issues.
I. Tree Ordinance
Mr. Souza stated that the Ordinance may be on a February 2008 City Council agenda. He will notify the Committee when it is scheduled in hopes that they will be available to attend the Council meeting in support of the Ordinance.
