BEAUTIFICATION ADVISORY COMMITTEE
MINUTES – April 2, 2008
1. ROLL CALL
Chairwoman Mellinger called the meeting to order at 3:00 p.m.
Committee members present: Sandi Johnson, Mary Ann Kline, Barbara Murphy, Alan Brown, Susan LaGrotta and Syd Mellinger.
City staff present: Susan Patton, Administrative Assistant and Patty Mastronardi.
Others present: Michael McGee from McGee and Associates.
2. APPROVE AGENDA
MOTION by Sandi Johnson TO APPROVE THE AGENDA. Second by M.A. Kline. Motion approved 6-0.
3 APPROVE MINUTES
MOTION by Sandi Johnson to APPROVE THE FEBRUARY 6, 2008 REGULAR MEETING MINUTES AMENDED TO CORRECT THE SPELLING OF SANDI JOHNSON IN THE MOTION TO APPROVE THE MINUTES ON PAGE ONE. Second by Alan Brown. Motion approved 6-0.
4. PUBLIC COMMENT
There was no public comment. Chairwoman Mellinger shared her disappointment that Chairman Trotter was unable to attend the meeting. Ms. Mellinger stated that during this critical budget year she feels it important for the seated Councilors to see first hand the work of the BAC.
5. CONSULTANT/CONTRACTOR – MEDIAN LANDSCAPE MAINTENANCE
A. Mike McGee
Mr. McGee reported that there are several areas along South Barfield Drive that need mulch in addition to dead wood pruning in the medians. Mr. McGee also stressed the need to remove a dead tree on S. Collier Boulevard that is producing Ganna Derma “concs” which will continue to spread the disease.
Ms. Sandi Johnson advised that she witnessed one of the street trees on Winterberry Drive being removed by landscapers. The tree appeared to be healthy. She inquired as to the permitting process for home owners to remove the City planted trees.
B. Commercial Land Maintenance
There was no report from Commercial Land Maintenance.
6. COMMITTEE DISCUSSION
A. South Collier Boulevard
Ms. Susan Patton stated that the 100% design plans for the South Collier Boulevard project have been submitted to FDOT. Once comments are received and addressed the project will be placed out for bid.
B. North Barfield Design
Mr. McGee informed the Committee that the 90% design plans for the North Barfield project have been submitted to FDOT for comment. Committee members reviewed the plans and Mr. McGee addressed their questions.
C. Garden Club Gift - Tract C and D
The Committee reaffirmed their recommendation for planting a large specimen Royal Poinciana tree at the trail head on Tract C&D at Sandhill Street.
D. Orchid Workshop Update
Ms. M.A. Kline reported that the Orchid Workshop held in conjunction with the Island Garden Center on February 13th was well attended and well received.
E. LDC Revisions
The LDC revision has been post-poned indefinitely.
F. Tree Ordinance
Ms. Patton advised that the Tree Ordinance will placed on the agenda for one of the May City Council meetings.
G. Marco in Bloom Awards
Ms. Kline shared her thoughts on the beautiful planters and window boxes currently displayed on 3rd Street in Naples.
Mr. Brown suggested that for future years landscapers could be approached to help increase entries into the annual Marco in Bloom beautification contest.
The Committee reviewed at great length the entries for the 2008 Marco in Bloom Awards. A point system was assigned to each of the four award criteria’s and the winner was determined by the total number of points received.
This year’s winner will receive their award at an upcoming City Council meeting.
7. DIRECTOR’S UPDATE
In Mr. Souza’s absence Susan Patton reported that their have been several calls in recent weeks commenting positively on the street banners and requesting to purchase a banner for personal use.
Ms. Patton also advised the Committee that there is a Public Meeting for the redesign of Leigh Plummer Park tentatively scheduled for Thursday, April 17th at 6:00 p.m. Committee members are urged to attend and will be notified once the date, time and location are confirmed.

There was no additional Committee communication.
