BEAUTIFICATION ADVISORY COMMITTEE
MINUTES – May 7, 2008
1. ROLL CALL
Chairwoman Mellinger called the meeting to order at 3:05 p.m.
Committee members present: Sandi Johnson, Mary Ann Kline, Barbara Murphy, Alan Brown, Susan LaGrotta and Syd Mellinger.
City staff present: Dana Souza, Interim City Manager, Susan Patton, Administrative Assistant and Patty Mastronardi.
Others present: Councilor Jerry Gibson, Councilor Chuck Kiester, and Michael McGee from McGee and Associates.
2. APPROVE AGENDA
MOTION by M. A. Kline TO APPROVE THE AGENDA AMENDED TO INCLUDE ITEM 6F, TREE ORDINANCE TIMING. Second by Sandi Johnson. Motion approved 6-0.
3 APPROVE MINUTES
MOTION by Barbara Murphy to APPROVE THE APRIL 2, 2008 REGULAR MEETING MINUTES. Second by Sandi Johnson. Motion approved 6-0.
4. PUBLIC COMMENT
There was no public comment.
5. CONSULTANT/CONTRACTOR – MEDIAN LANDSCAPE MAINTENANCE
A. Mike McGee
Mr. McGee reported no significant problems in the medians.
MOTION by Sandi Johnson to RECOMMEND THAT RED AND WHITE PENTAS BE PLANTED AT THE JOLLEY BRIDGE WELCOME SIGN. Second by Alan Brown. Motion approved 6-0.
Mr. McGee recommended a soil test in this location prior to new plantings.
B. Commercial Land Maintenance
There was no report from Commercial Land Maintenance.
6. COMMITTEE DISCUSSION
A. South Collier Boulevard
Mr. Dana Souza advised that stamped 100% design plans have been submitted to FDOT for comments. Once comments are received and addressed the project will be placed out for bid.
B. North Barfield Design
Mr. McGee stated that comments have been received for the 60% design plans for N. Barfield Drive. This project must be completed prior to the end of the calendar year.
C. Garden Club Gift - Tract C and D
Mr. McGee reported that this project is ready to move forward.
D. Marco in Bloom Awards
The Committee discussed the 2008 Marco in Bloom Awards and offered suggestions to improve publicity for future events. An effort will be made to increase press coverage for this year’s winners.
E. Leigh Plummer Park Public Meeting
The Committee briefly discussed the April 17th public meeting regarding the redesign of Leigh Plummer Park.
F. Tree Ordinance Timing
Mr. Souza advised that he is working on the revision of the tree ordinance with the City attorney. He also requested that the Committee address the possibility of allowing residents to plant “approved” trees in the swale as a way of furthering the beautification of the island at little or no cost to the City.
7. DIRECTOR’S UPDATE
Mr. Souza reported that tract C&D is in need maintenance including spraying the shell path for weeds and staking and removing some of the trees. The Committee agreed that they would like to see the wildflower beds expanded in this location.
Mr. Souza also informed the Committee that the maintenance contract was awarded recently. Commercial Land Maintenance was low bidder for the bulk of the work including the Historic Markers, Collier Blvd. medians, and roadside tree maintenance.

There was no additional Committee communication.
