BEAUTIFICATION ADVISORY COMMITTEE
MINUTES – June 4, 2008
1. ROLL CALL
Chairwoman Mellinger called the meeting to order at 3:00 p.m.
Committee members present: Sandi Johnson, Mary Ann Kline, Barbara Murphy, Alan Brown, Susan LaGrotta and Syd Mellinger.
City staff present: Dana Souza, Director, Susan Patton, Administrative Assistant and Patty Mastronardi, Administrative Assistant.
Others present: City Manager Steven Thompson, Chairman William Trotter, Councilor Jerry Gibson, Councilor Wayne Waldack, Mary Ann Maniace, Resident and Michael McGee from McGee and Associates.
2. APPROVE AGENDA
MOTION by S. Johnson TO APPROVE THE AGENDA AMENDED TO INCLUDE ITEM 6D PRUNING OF TREES BY LCEC & ITEM 6E SWALE PLANTING. Second by B. Murphy. Motion approved for both 6-0.
3 APPROVE MINUTES
MOTION by S. Johnson to APPROVE THE MAY 7, 2008 REGULAR MEETING MINUTES. Second by S. LaGrotta. Motion approved 6-0.
4. PUBLIC COMMENT
Chairman Trotter thanked the Committee for their efforts & to continue finding creative ways to stimulate the community. Councilor Gibson stated the work that the Committee does is important.
5. CONSULTANT/CONTRACTOR – MEDIAN LANDSCAPE MAINTENANCE
A. Mike McGee Overview
Mr. McGee reported no major issues at this time with regard to median landscape maintenance.
Sandi Johnson wanted to go on record thanking Alan Brown for his recommendation at the entrance sign.
B. Commercial Land Maintenance
Take off agenda for future meetings.
6. COMMITTEE DISCUSSION
A. Garden Club Tract C & D
Mr. Dana Souza will purchase the trees but waiting for rainy season to plant them in a few weeks per the Committee approval.
B. Tree Ordinance
Mr. Dana Souza reviewed most recent draft of the tree ordinance.
C. Banner Ordinance Review
Mr. McGee reported concern for specs and height of banner to prevent damage.
MOTION by S. Johnson RECOMMENED AMENDING THE BANNER ORDINANCE TO PERMIT A 4” EXTENSION THAT COULD HANG BELOW THE LOWER BANNER ARM . Second by M.A. Kline. Motion approved 6-0.
D. Pruning trees by LCEC
The Committee discussed concerns with LCEC’S technique for trimming trees and branches in preparation for hurricane season.
E. Swales/Landscaping/Rock
Mr. Souza stated that the current ordinance states that private planting is not permitted in swales.
7. DIRECTOR’S UPDATE
A. South Collier Blvd
Mr. Souza reported state approval has been received for the South Collier Blvd landscape project from Swallow Avenue to Swallow Avenue. The pre-bid meeting will be held on June 25, 2008.
B. North Barfield Drive Design
Mike McGee stated he finished 100% of the design for the North Collier Blvd landscape project. Dana Souza stated the grant money for this project will not be available until July 2009.
C. Leigh Plummer Park Redesign Update
Resident Mary Ann Maniace stated her concerns regarding the effects the Leigh Plummer Park redesign could have on the neighborhood
Mr. Dana Souza passed out design samples for signs for beach access. The Committee reviewed them and agreed to have a rounded bottom with a beige background with gulf green lettering on the letters and borders.
8. COMMITTEE COMMUNICATION
There was no additional Committee communication.
