REQUEST FOR CITY COUNCIL CONSIDERATION
Meeting Date: November
Agenda Item: Prepared By: Michael D. Murphy, Fire-Rescue Chief
Roger Reinke, Police Chief
Date: November 5, 2004
Agenda Section:
Business: Discussion
Subject: Award of Contract for Purchase of Fire Rescue/ Department: Fire-Rescue/Police
Police boat.
BACKGROUND:
During the FY 05 budget process the Fire-Rescue Department proposed the purchase of a new Fire Rescue Boat. The boat was to be purchased in a 50% partnership with EMS or private donations. The current Police/Fire 20 foot boat has developed fuel tank problems. In order to evaluate the extent of leakage it would require cutting into the existing deck and removing the tanks. This could jeopardize the integrity of the hull. The situation places the police and fire unable to respond to calls for service.
The police and fire rescue personnel have attempted to locate an appropriate boat that could be utilized for emergency response. During their investigation they found a 26-foot Donzi demo boat that was built specifically for police and fire response. This boat is manufactured to commercial and military specifications unlike the previously obtained police/ fire boat. The personnel placed an emphasis on delivery time with the upcoming holiday’s and season. Donzi has the ability to provide the boat 15 days after receipt of order. No other manufacturer could provide a boat in under 30 days and most ranged from three months to one year as outlined in the attached exhibit. The Donzi boat is also on the GSA contract and the list price is $97,314. The company is willing to sell the boat for $84,500 because it
is a demo with 50 hours of time on the engines.
Because of the emergency need to get a boat back into the water and because recent events placed Collier County EMS in a position not to commit impact fees, grant monies or funds for a fire/ EMS boat purchase at this time it is recommended that the opportunity to obtain this demo boat be capitalized upon.
RECOMMENDED ACTION:
1. Authorize purchase of 26 foot Donzi demo boat for utilization by police and fire rescue departments at this time.
2. Approve budget adjustment for FY 05 in the amount of $42,500 from general contingency fund for the purchase of Donzi boat. This will be utilized in conjunction with the previously approved $42,500 in FY 05 fire rescue budget.
