Public Works
The function of the Public Works Department is to maintain roads, bridges, sidewalks, public rights-of-way, including landscaped medians, storm drainage system, and the transportation system, including Island waterways.

The Department provides engineering review of site development plans and right-of-way permitting services.  The City of Marco Island Public Works Department is divided into two main departments:  Streets and Drainage, and Marco Island Utilities.

STREETS AND DRAINAGE-This department is responsible for offering infrastructure maintenance and construction services to the City in a prudent and timely way in order to provide safe and efficient public roads, bridges, traffic signals, streetlights, sidewalks and related facilities as well as assisting other agencies when needed.

In addition to planning, designing, constructing, and operating all public infrastructure and related facilities, the department is responsible for maintaining the following under the jurisdiction of the City:

•       383 roads (127 lane miles each way = 254 lane miles)
•       10 intersections with signals
•       525 stop-controlled intersections
•       2,000 streetlights
•       100 miles of waterways
•       15 bridges within the City
•       Underground and surface drainage systems
•       Public sidewalks and pathway network
•       Right-of-way maintenance: roadway pavement, safety, swales

Roadway and bridge repairs-Resurface streets; refresh striping on streets; remove debris from right-of-way; rehabilitate, rebuild, and repair pavement and repair sidewalks; coordinate bridge inspections and repairs with other agencies.

Traffic control and roadway safety-Install and replace regulatory and informational roadway signs; install new street name signs; repair traffic signals – all phases; repair streetlights; monitor Adopt-A-Road program; replace waterway markers.

Drainage and stormwater system-Replace failed storm sewer pipes and drainage inlets; install new and additional storm sewer outfalls; de-silt pipe networks; re-grade drainage swales; skim drainage boxes; maintain culverts.

Permitting activities-Assist all other agencies with permitting – right-of-way, for utilities; inspect both residential and commercial permits for new and upgraded construction projects – seawalls, pathways; sight development plan reviews.

Although many services are achieved more efficiently in a cost-effective manner through out-sourced annual contracts, the 11-person staff responds to citizen inquiries quickly and professionally.
