THE CITY OF MARCO ISLAND
MINUTES
City Council Workshop Meeting – August 30, 2004 – 6:00 p.m.
Chairwoman DiSciullo called the meeting to order and presided.
ROLL CALL
All Council members present, except Councilwoman Patterson who was absent, as well as staff, members of the news media, and the public.
BUSINESS
(A) DISCUSSION – Emergency Preparedness and Hurricane Charley.
City Manager Bill Moss provided City Council with a critique of the strengths and weaknesses in the City’s Emergency Preparedness Plan and post-disaster recovery.
Following discussion, council members concurred that enhancements to the City’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC) and communications systems would better serve the community during hurricane events. City Council agreed that the City Manager should proceed with the purchase of the recommended additional emergency equipment and to implement changes to the City’s hurricane related policies and procedures as deemed appropriate.
PUBLIC COMMENT
Mr. Don Farmer, 388 Lamplighter Drive, agreed that the Island needs a dedicated, reliable radio service during emergencies and suggested a few options for Council to consider.
Mr. Monte Lazarus, 222 Waterway Court, reminded Council that enlisting the Island’s Hamm Operators into service during emergencies is a “no cost” opportunity to improve communications.
ADJOURN
There being no further public comment, the meeting adjourned at 7:45 p.m.
