The meter replacement program was initiated in May of 2005. Utility companies, as a rule, change out meters on a regular basic, usually on a 10 year replacement program. Marco Island Utilities in conjunction with the block rate program and for better accuracy chose to replace meters with a touch pad type meter. This type of meter sends the meter reads through a signal that contains the read to the meter reader device, which is later downloaded into our computers for billing. This new system eliminates the possibility of human error caused by inputting incorrect numbers. This type of meter also eliminates the need to open the meter box which is often covered with dirt, water or insects, which in turn, increases our efficiency and the time taken to get the reads. We also have the ability to switch over to radio
frequency reads if the cost of transmitters becomes low enough to be a savings to the City. It is important to be accurate on our reads so that a misread will not push a customer’s usage into a higher block rate. Over the next five years, we expect to replace all residential meters.
