There is currently sand restoration work being done at Tigertail Lagoon and Sand Dollar Island to maintain compliance with State permit requirements. This 2026 maintenance focuses on maintaining nesting habitats and storm protective functions of the sandy berm. The work is authorized by state and federal environmental agencies that require such maintenance ahead of nesting seasons. This year’s maintenance includes grading the sand berm to address escarpments and will be completed in advance of bird and turtle nesting seasons. Additionally, the current operation near the mudflat is clearing small shoaling sections along the authorized flow channel to maintain tidal flow to the south part of the lagoon. The work is contracted through the City of Marco Island with funding from the Hideaway Beach Tax District. This restoration work is similar to restoration work done throughout the county and the state of Florida to address storm impacts, maintain the protective functions of natural features, and maintain tidal flow throughout coastal bays and lagoons and their environmental habitats. In 2023, the ecosystem restoration project was completed which included restoration of the collapsing part of the island and lagoon using approximately 500,000 cubic years of sand to construct a berm. The purpose of the berm is to act as a natural shield to protect the lagoon and its habitat as well as the upland development on the other side of the berm. The project also restored wetland areas and tidal flow to the southern part of the Tigertail Lagoon, improving water quality and enhancing environmental habitats and recreational benefits. In early 2024, the City worked with Collier County to divide the cost of ongoing maintenance of the berm. City of Marco Island tax dollars are not being used for this project or the ongoing maintenance.
