What is going on at the intersection of Collier Boulevard and Barfield Drive?
In April 2025, City Council approved an improvement project at the intersection of North Collier Boulevard and North Barfield Drive to address congestion and traffic flow issues. Construction began in September 2025 after the project was competitively bid.  The existing configuration lacks adequate turn-lane length and dedicated through lanes to manage traffic effectively. Improvements include new traffic signals, controllers, poles, pedestrian safety enhancements, through lanes, medians, sidewalks, and water and reclaimed water main work. This intersection experiences the highest congestion levels on the island, and once complete, the project will significantly improve traffic flow and reduce delays.

Why is the City doing this work during season?
This is a year-long project, so construction will occur during season regardless of the start date. We recognize this work is disruptive since most residents and visitors travel through this intersection, but the completed improvements will significantly enhance traffic flow and safety.

Why can’t the work be done at night?
Trench excavations for underground water mains and median demolition require continuous (24-hour) lane closures since open trenches cannot be safely filled, compacted, and paved daily, so night-only construction would still require daytime lane closures, defeating the purpose while increasing nighttime disruption to nearby homes.  After median demolition, construction activities that could impact peak northbound or southbound traffic periods will be scheduled at night whenever feasible. Milling, paving, and compaction work is timed to avoid peak travel hours when possible.

When will construction be complete?
The project is on schedule and anticipated to be completed in September 2026.

How are residents being informed about traffic changes?
Community outreach began in July 2025. Since then, the City has issued multiple press releases, posted updates on the City website, and shared information through social media channels. Residents are encouraged to monitor local newspapers, the City website, City Hall Facebook and Nextdoor pages, and Marco Island Police Department social media for updates.  While the City strives to provide timely information, construction priorities and field conditions may occasionally require short-notice changes.

How much is this project costing taxpayers?
The project construction contract is $4.7 million and is being performed by Coastal Concrete Products, LLC (DBA Coastal Site Development).

Why was the left turn onto Fairlawn closed?
The left turn was initially allowed but created significant congestion. Vehicles crossing opposing traffic caused backups on Collier Boulevard and Fairlawn Drive. After the turn was restricted, traffic flow improved substantially, reducing delays and improving overall roadway efficiency.

Why are large trucks allowed on Yellowbird Street?
Truck traffic is permitted to support overall traffic circulation on the island. The roadway was reconstructed in 2020, and its pavement and underground infrastructure are capable of accommodating current traffic volumes and truck traffic. The City continues to monitor traffic patterns and will make adjustments as needed to ensure safe and efficient travel.

What can I do to minimize delays?
Residents and visitors can reduce travel impacts by:

·         Monitoring City websites and social media for traffic updates

·         Carpooling or combining the purpose of trips

·         Planning trips outside peak commuting times (before 7:30 a.m. or after 5:30 p.m.)

The City appreciates your patience as these improvements will enhance safety and quality of life. Please drive carefully and remain alert for construction workers.
