MARCO ISLAND, Fla. — The City of Marco Island is aware of public concerns surrounding the City’s use of license plate reader cameras. The city does not use Flock cameras and does not own or operate cameras made by Flock Safety. The Marco Island Police Department does use automated license plate reader technology, also known as ALPR. These cameras are located at or near the entrances and exits of the Island and are located on City roads. ALPR cameras capture license plate information and are used to alert officers when a plate is linked to a stolen vehicle, a wanted or missing person, or other documented law enforcement concerns. “We want residents to have clear and accurate information about the technology used by the city,” Police Chief Joseph Belardo said. “Marco Island does not use Flock cameras. Our Police Department uses a different ALPR system to help officers locate vehicles connected to crimes and other public safety concerns.” Earlier this week, the Florida Department of Transportation issued a memorandum revoking permits for ALPR cameras located within state road rights of way. The city has reviewed the memorandum in coordination with the City Attorney and determined that it does not apply to the ALPR cameras used by the Marco Island Police Department. The FDOT memorandum applies only to license plate readers located within rights of way on the State of Florida Highway System. The City’s ALPR cameras are located on City roads.
