Over the past year the City of Marco Island Water and Sewer Department transitioned to Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) water meters that transmit real-time water usage data to customers.  This technology allows for more accurate readings of water usage and sends alerts when potential leaks are detected or when consumption is higher than normal.

Recently some Marco Island residents have received high consumption alerts from the City indicating a spike in usage or a possible leak.  Due to a technical issue with the billing software that communicates with the smart meters, the City has turned off the consumption alerts.  If residents continue to get an alert, there may be a legitimate leak which can be confirmed by contacting customer service for assistance.

For accounts that show a spike in water usage that is invalid, customers will not be charged for water that is not used.  For leaks that have led to increases in the water bill, the City has a billing adjustment policy in which customers may request an adjustment on their water bill for leaks. A written request must be submitted within 90 days of the billing period in question and include a copy of the paid repair bill.  Adjustments are limited to no more than two adjustments in a 36-month period.
