City Councilor Darrin Palumbo

Term:  2022 - 2026

E-mail: DPalumbo@marcocitycouncil.com

Personal and Family:

Darrin is a 24-year resident of Marco Island. He has been married to his wife Suzanne for 24 years. Their two children, Jenna and Ryan were born and raised on Marco Island and have each grown up playing sports and attending local schools. Both have recently graduated from Marco Island Academy and are now attending college.

Background/Professional:

Darrin is a local small business owner of “Sweet Annie’s Ice Cream Parlor.” He employs and mentors over 30 local high school and college students at his business and enjoys interacting with everyone in the community who comes into his popular shop. Darrin is enjoying his time in the ice cream business and loves that this affords him the opportunity to now hire many of the kids that he has coached on the island. His personal belief is, “We need to leave every employee better than we found them. We need to pay it forward by teaching life lessons, providing financial planning advice, and instilling life values so that we can then send them out into the real world better prepared than when they came to us.” He believes there is no greater joy than giving back to a community that has given so much to himself and his family.

Darrin’s professional background is in the real estate industry, where he has worked as a realtor for 32 years. He has held licenses as an SEC security broker, mortgage broker, and insurance broker (life, health, and property and casualty).

Darrin is a Safe Boater and U.S. Auxiliary course graduate. Darrin believes his business background, and now his background as a small business owner, is a perfect fit for the job of City Council. His background has afforded him the opportunity to negotiate both on a personal and business level with some of the largest insurers within our state. He has had the opportunity to finance, negotiate and facilitate well over $500 million in loans and contract negotiations. He has worked with local and state government and environmental agencies regarding land development and property rights.

As a former Member of Marco Island Waterways Advisory Committee, Darrin helped to draft much-needed ordinances to ensure that Marco Island could service our over 100 miles of sea walls and ensure the protection of our environmentally sensitive waterways. Darrin believes our waterways are the lifeblood of our community and that we need to do all that we can on a local and state level to ensure their quality.

Education:

Darrin graduated South Plainfield High School in South Plainfield, NJ and studied at Middlesex County College and Rutgers University. He also attended New Jersey Realty Institute & Bert Rogers Real Estate School.  He is a graduate of the Florida Mortgage Brokers Institute, is graduate of the Market Wise Stock Trading School, and holds special designations in the real estate, financing, and securities fields.

Volunteer/Community Work:

Darrin is a big believer in giving back to the community. He has a special place in his heart for the children of Marco Island. He raised over $140,000 for the Marco Island Academy academic and sports programs. He was a mentor in the Big Brother/Big Sister program for over 20 years and still keeps in contact with his “Little Brother” Josh, to whom he is still close. He is immensely proud that Josh is and will always be a part of his family.

Darrin was an assistant Boy Scout Troop Leader from 2004 to 2007 as well as a Fellowship of Christian Athletes coach and mentor. St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital awarded him a “Certificate of Appreciation” for his financial support and help in fundraising and volunteer efforts.

Darrin has loved his time volunteer coaching in Marco Island’s local sports programs. He volunteered for 7-years as an Optimist Club soccer coach, 3-years as a 3v3 soccer coach, 4-years as a high school soccer coach, 2-years as a high school cross country coach, and another 2-years as a high school track and field coach.

For the last 24 years, Darrin has lived in our community, where he has both grown and prospered. He has enjoyed giving back in ways such as beach clean-ups, mangrove restoration, volunteering for Christmas Island Style events, supporting Kiwanis events, car washes, etc. One thing he most enjoyed was assisting in Hurricane Irma post clean-up events. Even though Irma was a tragedy, he believes it was an incredible moment watching neighbors helping each other and supporting each other in their time of need. Darrin is incredibly grateful to the community he loves so much.
