Erik C. Brechnitz
Erik Brechnitz has been a resident of Marco Island since 1995 and has considerable prior experience in municipal government, having served on the Decatur, Illinois city council for 10 years and as the city’s mayor for another four years. During his tenure as mayor, Erik hired two very successful city managers, in a system of government similar in many respects to Marco Island’s council-manager organization.
Erik was Chairman of the Marco Island Planning Board, serving an unprecedented second term as the board’s chairman, a position filled yearly via election by fellow board members. The planning board is responsible for the development of a comprehensive plan and development code for Marco Island to ensure the preservation of the island’s quality of life for the enjoyment of future generations.
Significant Civic Achievements
As Mayor of Decatur, supervised $100 million budget; lowered property taxes during three years of four-year term; and built $40 million water treatment plant with adjustable rate bond issue.
Took over as chairman of the bankrupt Decatur Public Building Commission, restructured debt and completed $20 million court renovation with no increase in taxes.
Board Chairman of Millikin University and chairman of the Budget & Finance Committee.
Received an Honorary Doctor of Letters degree from Millikin University in May of 2016
