School Resource Officer Unit
The Marco Island Police Department School Resource Unit consists of three full-time School Resource Officers and two part-time School Resource Officers. These officers provide service to Tommie Barfield Elementary, Marco Island Charter Middle School and Marco Island Academy. These officers also work with several pre-schools and child care centers on Marco Island, Including the Marco YMCA, St. Marks Preschool and Island Montessori Academy.
All School Resource Officers within the MIPD are FDLE certified SROs.
It is the goal of our SRO program to be focused on the education of students, the development of positive relationships with students and the prevention of juvenile delinquency in the City of Marco Island.
Assigning police officers to schools encourages positive interactions between the police officers and students, which fosters good communication between the two groups. Many young people are wary of developing friendly relationships with police officers. By working closely with schools and students, police officers can:
- Provide for a safer school environment
- Be a positive role model for students
- Build positive relationships with students, parents and faculty
- Reduce and prevent juvenile delinquency.
During the Summer months and on days when school is not in session, our School Resource Officers are often deployed to parks and beaches where our youth are likely to congregate. These Officers especially focus on assisting and mentoring at the Camp Mackle and YMCA summer camps. Additionally, the MIPD SRO unit in conjunction with the Marco Island Fire and Rescue department, hosts a Police and Fire Youth Academy for one week each summer. This academy is open to sixth through eighth graders and provides campers with a look into the police and fire professions.
