Chris Byrne Fire Chief

Fire Chief Chris Byrne

Chief Byrne began his fire service career in 1983 as an entry-level firefighter with the Marco Island Fire Control District, which became a municipal fire department in 1998. He worked his way through the ranks culminating with promotion to Deputy Fire Chief in 2001. In 2016, Chief Byrne retired after 33 years of service with the Marco Island Fire Rescue Department. He was not retired for long before being called back in September 2017 to act as Safety Officer for Hurricane Irma. He continued with the City as Incident Commander of Recovery. In August 2020, Chief Byrne was appointed Fire Chief of the City of Marco Island Fire Rescue Department.

Chief Byrne holds a BS degree in Management from International College, and Associates Degree in Fire Science from Edison Community College. 

Mathew Marshall

Deputy Chief Mathew Marshall

Chief Marshall was a Battalion Chief with the Cape Coral Fire Department where he served for 17 years. Matt is well known for his efforts at the State level to equip, fund and train regional hazardous material teams. He was instrumental in the development of common SOG’s among the teams and served as Chairman of the Florida Association for Hazardous Materials Responders. Matt is an accomplished instructor and a regular presenter at FFCA and IAFC Conferences. Matt has instructed many of our County 160-hour certified Hazmat Technicians. Matt holds an Associates degree from American Military University, certified Paramedic, Fire Officer 2, Live Fire Instructor, Fire Service Instructor, and Task Force Leader for US&R Task Force 6.

Fire Marshal Daniel Zunzunegui

Chief Zunzunegui has 19 years of experience in the Fire Service. He previously served as the Deputy Director of Growth Management and Strategic Planning with the North Collier Fire & Rescue District where he was responsible for fire plan review of new construction and building alterations, site development plans, and fire protection system compliance. He coordinated fire plan review and SDP review with Collier County Growth Management Department. He has served as Accreditation Manager and has authored Strategic Plans for North Collier Fire District and City of Naples Fire Department where he served 13 years as a Lieutenant Paramedic. Dan has a very strong academic resume consisting of a Master’s Degree in Consumer Quality Management, a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Safety Management and an Associate’s Degree in Education. Chief Zunzunegui is a State of Florida Fire Safety Inspector, Firefighter, Fire Officer and is a licensed Paramedic. 

 

Jake Clemmons

Training Officer Jake Clemmons 

Captain Clemmons has been in the fire service for over 15 years. His career started with Marion County Fire Rescue where he worked through the ranks to the position of driver engineer. Captain Clemmons joined the City of Marco Island as a firefighter/paramedic in 2018. In 2020 he was promoted to the position of Training Officer. Captain Clemmons is a graduate of The University of Florida, holding a Bachelor's degree in Fire and Emergency Services, specializing in Emergency Management as well as an Associate's degree from The College of Central Florida in Emergency Medical Services. Captain Clemmons is also a certified Hazmat Tech, Fire Officer 1, Instructor 2, Live Fire Training Instructor, and a Florida certified Safety Officer. Captain Clemmons currently works to provide fire and medical training to fire rescue staff, coordinate training with neighboring agencies, and coordinate CPR course offerings for the public.

Administrative Assistant Kelley Aroney

Kelly joined the Fire Rescue Department in 2023. She plays a crucial role in supporting the team by handling administrative tasks and ensuring smooth operations and takes pride in providing top-notch assistance. Kelly has extensive experience in the Court System and previously served as a Deputy Clerk for the Collier County Clerk of Courts in City Hall. Kelly is also an avid Notre Dame Fighting Irish fan!!
