On-Going Beach Monitoring

  • Collect trash while on the beach
  • Monitor beach for Beach Ordinance rules
  • Monitor Collier County projects on Marco Island beaches
  • Continue organizing community beach clean-ups by coordinating local clubs, organizations, and businesses to sponsor beach clean-ups
  • Continue educating beachfront property owners and beachgoers about the lighting regulations
  • Continue to monitor and recommend necessary beach projects to the City Manager to request of Collier County

 

2019 Goals

  • Research voluntary initiatives/programs to replace the use of single-use plastic bags and plastic straws island-wide to reduce our plastic footprint.
  • Expand monthly Beach Clean-up program to include non-Saturday mornings and evenings.Hold small Beach Awareness events on a semi-annual basis.
  • Increase outreach and communication with beach vendors, restaurants, hotels and condominiums, time shares, and homeowners along the beach and organizations island wide to reduce trash on our beaches, awareness of beach etiquette and respect for our wildlife. Prepare educational presentations on beach topics such as plastic straws, Styrofoam containers, nesting shorebirds, sea turtles and water quality.
  • Increase outreach with school children to promote environmental awareness on such issues as “respect for wildlife; sea turtle season; and “best practices of environmental stewardship.”
  • Submit newspaper articles to promote awareness of the issues and concerns being discussed by the Beach and Coastal Resources Advisory Committee. Potential topics could include beach re-nourishment, Beach Stewardship Program, Beach-Cleanups, Wildlife, Iguanas, burrowing owls & gopher tortoises, eagles and ospreys.
  • Promote increased participation in the Volunteer Beach Stewardship Program with presentations to clubs, organizations, and businesses to gain volunteers and possible sponsorship.
  • Work toward Collier County installation of a lightning detector at South Beach using TDC funds.
  • Work with environmental organizations such as Audubon of the Western Everglades, Audubon Florida, Rookery Bay, the Conservancy of SW Florida, Collier County Shorebird Stewardship and FWC to help protect and preserve Marco’s coastal natural resources.
