Emergency Permitting

City of Marco Island Growth Management Department Emergency Permitting System

In accordance with Section 6-179 (b) of the Marco Island Code of Ordinances, an emergency permitting system has been developed to facilitate post-disaster recovery and reconstruction.

The following policies are effective upon Notice by the City Manager:

Emergency repairs may be made to residential, commercial, and industrial  structures without a requirement for an individual building permit for the following activities for a period of 60 days:

  • Temporary roof repairs with plywood or plastic sheeting to make structures habitable or to prevent continuing damage due to rain and wind to building and exteriors;
  • Covering exterior wall openings with plywood or plastic sheeting;
  • Repairs to interior ceilings to make buildings habitable or to drain accumulated flood waters;
  • Repairs to steps;
  • Temporary stabilization measures to avoid imminent building or structure collapse;
  • Replacement of outdoor air conditioning units;
  • Replacement of flooring in bathrooms;
  • Replacement of cabinets;
  • Roof repair of less than 400 square feet;
  • Replacement of less than 25 percent of windows in single family homes; and
  • Demolition of screened pool enclosures.

In addition, carpeting, tile work, painting, and wallpapering does not require a building permit.

The Building Services Division will review building permit applications and conduct inspection activities in the following priority order:

  1. destroyed structures;
  2. damaged structures;
  3. roofing permits;
  4. screened pool enclosures; and
  5. all other permits.

Building permit information can be taken over the phone by city staff.  The number to call is 389-5059.  Once the information recorded, the permit applicant can sign the paperwork at a later date.
